Over the last weeks and months I often ran into a situation where I wanted to document knowledge around different topics, but I couldn’t find a suitable solution. Last weekend I had the idea that a blog might be a good way to do this. I’ve been using Claude and other LLMs quite a bit over the last months to help with different tasks, so I asked Claude to do some research on suitable blogging platforms and here I am.

About Me

I am Thomas, a data scientist with a background in Economics and software engineering, and I am based in Vienna, Austria. After graduating from a secondary school with a technical focus (in Austria we call it HTL) the financial crisis sparked my interest in Economics and so I decided to dive a bit deeper into that area and study it. After I finished my Master’s I worked at the university as a project assistant for a few years, before starting as a data scientist (while still trying to finish my dissertation).

What You’ll Find Here

I am interested in many different topics, so you will probably find a somewhat weird mixture of blog posts on gardening (indoor with plants and herbs, but also outdoor), forestry, coding, using LLMs, tech-related stuff like setting up a home assistant using a Raspberry Pi (assuming I finally get to it) and maybe also some posts about games and books.

Why I’m Writing This

The main reason I am writing this is to document things for myself. It happens quite often that I set something up (e.g. this blog) and would like to have the process documented and so far I am mainly using txt files for this purpose. But I want something “nicer” that is also more structured than a txt file and I will try to do this here. I’ve always been a person who likes to share knowledge, so I hope that other people will find something useful here as well. And lastly, having something to show for also seems like a nice side effect.

What’s Next

My first blog post will be about how to set up a blog like this (so I also have parts of the process documented to set it up on a second laptop) and hopefully it will be the first of many.
